Dillion's ability to revive the unique sound of the Hammond organ has long been recognised amongst his peers and within the industry. His voice is mature for his somewhat fresh age of thirty-two, and the 2010 BASEQ Blues Performer of the Year’s funky upbeat style has become polished, but not lacking in the rawness you would expect from a blues-roots, reggae singer.
He can catch an audience off guard. His vocal performances are intuitive. His powerful rhythms irresistible. Dillion's third album ‘Blues Roots Reggae’ reached #5 in the Australian Blues and Roots charts.
Playing simultaneous Hammond and bass lines with foot pedals, he regularly links up with gun guitarists and sax players from Melbourne to Cairns. Dillion lays down the platform for authentic grooves that inspire sophisticated jams. The Dillion James Band tours as a three or four piece band and can fill a festival stage with drums, guitars, saxophones, percussion and his Hammond Magic.
Dillion is one of twelve talented kids from the Atherton Tablelands with music core to his life, and instruments never more than an arms reach away. His family experience growing up drew him to hunt for musical authenticity in hot-spots like Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans. Numerous tours of South East Asia taught him to be ethical, professional and international. Six months travelling the Australian outback and deserts nourished his creativity and style.
For over 15 years as a keyboardist or bassist he has been in the engine room with the likes of Mojo Webb, Blind Dog Donnie, Die Rude, Blind Lemon, Mick Hadley and many touring blues artists. Dillion has most recently been enjoying centre stage singing his original socially critical lyrics, with clever improvising on the Hammond organ.
